A few blocks into old Parian sits the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House, a 1600s coral-stone-and-hardwood Chinese-Filipino home you can walk through. The reason to give Tagbilaran an afternoon instead of just driving through to the Chocolate Hills. The headline gallery, 'Pagpauli,' holds the most complete collection anywhere of National Artist sculptor Napoleon Abueva, who was born on this island; 'Pagbanhaw' confronts the 2013 earthquake and the heritage churches it toppled, and a natural-history room lays out Bohol's geology with fossils and a diorama. Local's tip: it's free, air-conditioned and sits right at Kilometer Zero in the city centre — an easy, genuinely moving yes before the countryside tour.

A pre-dawn departure from Panglao for spinner dolphins, then snorkeling the Balicasag coral wall and turtles (capped at 30–45 min per guest by local tourism rules), ending at Virgin Island's starfish-dotted sandbar. Dolphins show best March–June — go on a 6am boat, when the sea is flattest.

The full Badian-to-Kawasan canyoneering run is the real deal — scrambling, swimming, and jumping off ledges from ~4m up to a heart-stopping 10m (all optional, with climb-down alternatives) before you land at the turquoise Kawasan pools. Local's tip: it's closed every 3rd Wednesday of the month for cleanup, and slots are managed through official booking, so reserve ahead and go early.

Malapascua is one of the only places on earth you can reliably see pelagic thresher sharks at a cleaning station, and since 2022 the action has moved from Monad to Kimud Shoal, where sightings are the best in 20+ years. Local's tip: it's a pre-dawn boat (you'll be diving by 6am) and the cleaning station sits around 12m, so even Open Water divers can do it — no deco needed.

Millions of sardines spiral in a dense, shape-shifting bait ball just 3–5m off Panagsama Beach — you can freedive straight into the school without a boat. The same site has a turtle-cleaning station and a coral wall that drops to 40m for divers. Local's tip: Freedive Moalboal runs beginner apnea courses at the sardine site itself — the bait ball is a textbook breath-hold classroom.

Tucked in the jungle of Antequera about an hour from Panglao, Mag-aso ('smoke,' for the mist off the water) is twin 8-metre cascades dropping into a startling turquoise pool inside a limestone canyon. A short, sometimes-slippery concrete stairway gets you down in about 15 minutes, and the real fun is in the gorge — swimming the deep cool pool, picking a line for a small cliff jump on the far side (mind the submerged rocks), and wading downstream past ferns and boulders. Local's tip: entrance is a token ₱50 and there's no single technical operator, so most people come self-guided or bolt it onto a private countryside-and-waterfall day tour — a relaxed canyon fix without the full Kawasan-style rappel circuit.

The honest counterpoint to Oslob. Bohol banned whale-shark feeding in early 2025, so there's no guaranteed line-up here — just the deep blue off Pamilacan and Balicasag where, in the plankton months of November to March, a wild butanding may glide past your boat or dive on its own terms. It's chance, not a show, which is exactly the point: the animal hasn't been bribed and its migration hasn't been broken. Local's tip: even when the sharks don't show, Pamilacan runs ethical dolphin-watching cruises and Balicasag's wall is one of the best turtle-and-jackfish dives in the country, so you book the day for the whole package, not the sure thing.

An hour inland from Cebu City past Toledo, a sun-bleached limestone crag rises out of the jungle — Cantabaco, widely called the best rock climbing in the Philippines. Five sectors hold 100-plus bolted sport routes, from beginner 6a slabs to brutal 8a+ overhangs hung with tufas and pockets, and local guides rent gear and belay first-timers. Local's tip: the village charges only a token climber's fee and there's a red-roofed B&B where climbers post up for days — get there by bus to Toledo then a short habal-habal into the hills, which usually beats any packaged day-trip price.

Carcar's lechon strip at the New Public Market is the cult favorite Cebuanos drive an hour south for — stuffed with spices, fruit juice and a local leaf, then chopped with the pork drippings mixed back in. Stalls all charge about the same, so wander the back row taking free tastes before you pick, and arrive mid-morning when the pigs are freshest.

About 20 minutes from Alona Beach in Dauis, Bohol Bee Farm is the island's farm-to-table institution — organic garden salads, honey-glazed dishes, and cult ice cream flavors like malunggay (moringa), durian, langka and spicy ginger, served clifftop over the sea. Come for lunch, then grab raw honey and chocolate from the on-site shop on the way out.

An open-air compound of 30 competing BBQ stalls beside Chong Hua Hospital: you pick your raw cuts from the display — liempo, chicken skin, isaw, squid — watch them grill over a communal charcoal bed, and eat with puso, Cebu's rice woven and steamed inside a diamond-shaped coconut palm pouch for ₱4–6, with a faint grassy coconut flavor the rest of the Philippines can't replicate. Full meal runs ₱150–300. Local's tip: tear the leaf fold at one end and squeeze the rice out directly — no plate needed — and pick whichever stall has the most smoke going; the quality is uniform, the smoke is not.

A roughly 45-minute glide by native paddle boat through 1.4km of mangroves to where the river meets the sea, run entirely by BAETAS — a co-op of trained local fisherfolk, farmers and housewives in Aloguinsan. Book the full package ahead (around P800–850 per person) for the welcome ceremony, home-cooked Cebuano lunch and handicraft demo. They cap visitors at 50–60 a day and the boats only run at high tide, so coordinate timing with the tourism office when you reserve.

After dark, a quiet boat glides you upstream beneath the riverside trees of Loboc, where thousands of fireflies pulse in the foliage along the bank — guided by boatmen from the riverside community, not the big resorts. Go between 6 and 8pm on a moonless, clear night, and stay still with lights off so the fireflies keep coming close.

If Panglao feels too busy, Anda on Bohol's far eastern tip is the slow alternative — powdery white sand, glassy water, and Amun Ini Beach Resort & Spa, an intimate beachfront retreat built around proper spa sessions and quiet. Local's tip: it's roughly a 2–3 hour drive from Tagbilaran, so settle in for several nights rather than a day-trip — the whole point of Anda is doing very little.

The Thalasso pool — seawater heated to 34°C drawn from the Mactan channel — is the centrepiece of one of Cebu's most complete spa resorts. Non-guests can book spa + lunch day passes. Tip: the thalassotherapy circuit (hydro jets, floating beds, thermal loungers) is worth the day-pass price before any treatment; allow a full afternoon.

Balicasag's blue-hole wall is a freediver's quiet gem — visibility regularly hits 30+ metres with a clean thermocline. Several Panglao operators pair a morning freedive session with a late-morning yoga session on the boat or beach. Tip: Aquatica Divers and Big Blue work with yoga guides; a one-day combo runs around ₱3,500 per person including pumpboat and instructor.

A 40-minute pumpboat from Maya port (north Cebu) reaches Malapascua — famous for daily guaranteed thresher shark sightings at Monad Shoal at 5am, and white sand at Bounty Beach. Tip: stay at least 2 nights — the shark dive is the reason to come but the second day, with less pressure, is usually the better dive. Non-divers enjoy the beach and shallow house reef.

The 1,268+ conical limestone formations of the Chocolate Hills are UNESCO-nominated — and the conservation program now offers guided eco-trails where proceeds go to local farmers and single-use plastics are prohibited on the trail. The trek through the mounds is more interesting than the grandstand view. Tip: the grasses turn chocolate-brown only in dry season (Mar–Apr); at other times they're lush green — equally photogenic, just different.

The community guide cooperative at Kawasan Falls in Badian manages all canyoneering guide fees after commercial operators were found bypassing local hire. Booking through the cooperative means the guide fee stays in Badian barangay. Tip: ₱1,500/person (guide + equipment) booked at the barangay hall; the 3-hour descent hits 3 waterfalls and the final swim into Kawasan's turquoise pool is the payoff.
