The Philippines' first dedicated drag nightclub, opened February 2024 — 630–800 sqm with a rotating cast of Rampa Reynas. Founded during the 2020 lockdown by a horizontal collective with no CEO and equal-voice governance, MCR has broadcast over 1,000 shows and received a Boiler Room Broadcast Lab grant — resulting in a landmark showcase inside a decommissioned Marikina River boiler room. Functions as Manila underground electronic music's connective tissue, home to CONTINUUM, CHURCH, Transit Records, and dozens of collectives. Brought budots (Davao grassroots dance music) onto Boiler Room's global platform. Walk the ramparts of Fort Santiago where José Rizal spent his last night before execution, step into San Agustin — the country's oldest stone church (1607), a UNESCO site that outlasted every war and earthquake since — then tour Casa Manila, a recreated 1800s ilustrado mansion with capiz-shell windows and period rooms. Local's tip: come for the late-afternoon light, then stay for a horse-drawn kalesa or the cobblestone bars near Plaza San Luis — and build the day around San Agustin, which is shut Mon–Tue.

In Songco, in the foothills of sacred Mount Kitanglad, the Talaandig people run a School of Living Traditions where youth learn music, dance, oral history and the tribe's signature art: soil painting — works made entirely from ochre clays of the ancestral land, pulverised and mixed, each colour carrying meaning. Davao's free 'people's museum' is the most accessible, well-curated window into Mindanao's indigenous Lumad cultures — the Bagobo, Mandaya, B'laan, Mansaka and others — alongside the Moro peoples, all under one roof in the city centre. Its Indigenous People's and Moro People's galleries hold the beadwork, weaving, brass kulintang gongs and belief-system displays that explain Davao's first peoples on their own terms, and a recent reopening added a hands-on corner with facsimile gongs. Run by the city as a public, non-commercial institution, your visit supports stewardship rather than extracting from a vulnerable community. Local's tip: make it your first stop — once you can tell a Bagobo motif from a Mandaya one, every market textile and craft stall in the region reads differently; buy directly from Lumad weavers and brass-casters when you find them.

From Batad, a further 30 minutes down brings you to Tappiyah Falls, a 70m drop into a pool where you have the jungle to yourself. San Juan is Luzon's surf capital and the most accessible break from Manila — a 4-hour drive north and you're in the water. Urbiztondo Beach runs a consistent right-hander in the Amihan (NE trade winds), gentle enough for beginners on the inside, punchy enough for intermediates on the outside. Local's tip: the waves run from dawn until afternoon wind chop kills them, so arrive early; the town's surf-culture scene (coffee, yoga) fills the rest of the day.

Dahican is a 7km Pacific-facing beach near Mati producing mellow longboard-friendly beach break from October to February — the annual Longboard Classic is held here. The same beach is a nesting site for critically endangered hawksbill turtles; community patrols escort visitors to watched nests in the early hours. Local's tip: a hired van from Davao to Mati takes about 4 hours; stay in Mati the night before to hit the surf at first light.

An overnight bus from Manila gets you to Sagada for the legendary four-hour 'cave connection.' You enter Lumiang Burial Cave past a wall of carved hardwood coffins stacked nine layers high (the oldest around 500 years old), then disappear into the mountain — rappelling down rock shafts on guide-held ropes, squeezing through tight gaps, clambering barefoot over slick flowstone, and wading waist-deep through cold underground streams before climbing up and out through Sumaguing. Local's tip: guides are mandatory and arranged on the spot at the Sagada Tourism Center, the full connection is for fitter spelunkers (a shorter Sumaguing-only trip exists for the less brave), and you want shoes you can soak and ruin — go in the dry months, as the caves get dangerous after heavy rain.

Dulang-Dulang is the Philippines' second-highest peak (2,938m), entirely within Bukidnon's Pantaron mountain range — and almost entirely free of the crowds that pack Mt. Apo. The summit trail takes 2 days; the views from the high ridge cover both the Pacific coast and the Sulu Sea on clear days. Tip: hire a guide and porter through the Kitanglad Range Protected Area Service; permits available in Malaybalay. Carry a rain jacket regardless of the forecast.

The breeding and rescue centre for the critically endangered Philippine Eagle — the national bird, one of the most powerful eagles in the world by wingspan-to-body ratio, and down to fewer than 800 individuals in the wild. The Malagos compound has resident eagles in large flight enclosures and other endemic Philippine wildlife. Tip: book the early-morning 'keeper experience' (released quarterly, limited slots) to be present during eagle feeding — the closest most people will ever get to one.

A cold volcanic crater lake at 1,100m elevation in the Kitanglad Range — dark water, steep forested banks and near-constant cloud mist that makes the lake feel like a highland legend. The 3–4 hour hike from Barangay Dalirig passes through pine and mossy forest with good bird-watching (Philippine eagle has been sighted in the Kitanglad buffer zone). Tip: register at the DENR Kitanglad office in Manolo Fortich and hire a guide; trailhead is 1.5h from Malaybalay.

Del Monte's Bukidnon operation at Manolo Fortich is one of Southeast Asia's largest pineapple plantations — 12,000 hectares of rows at 800m elevation where the air is genuinely cool. Camp Phillips, the former American colonial estate, still operates with century-old acacia trees and a guesthouse. Tip: highland fog rolls in hard after 2pm; morning tours from Cagayan de Oro (1.5h) let you see the rows in clear light. The tinned pineapple you've eaten your whole life may have come from here.
