The Philippines' second-highest peak (2,926m) and the one most people actually reach — the Ambangeg trail through dwarf bamboo and mossy forest to a summit where, on clear mornings, an unbroken sea of pink cloud stretches to every horizon. Local's tip: start the summit push at 3am from the DENR ranger station to catch first light from the top. Book your slot weeks ahead via the Bokod Municipal Tourism Office — numbers are capped.

The 2,000-year-old Batad amphitheatre — the most dramatic of Ifugao's UNESCO terraces, shaped like a natural stadium around a living village — is reached by a 45-minute descent from the saddle above Banaue. From Batad, a further 30 minutes down brings you to Tappiyah Falls, a 70m drop into a pool where you have the jungle to yourself. Local's tip: stay a night in Batad — the terraces at dawn, before the day-trip vans arrive from Banaue, are the memory.

San Juan is Luzon's surf capital and the most accessible break from Manila — a 4-hour drive north and you're in the water. Urbiztondo Beach runs a consistent right-hander in the Amihan (NE trade winds), gentle enough for beginners on the inside, punchy enough for intermediates on the outside. Local's tip: the waves run from dawn until afternoon wind chop kills them, so arrive early; the town's surf-culture scene (coffee, yoga) fills the rest of the day.

Tucked in the jungle of Antequera about an hour from Panglao, Mag-aso ('smoke,' for the mist off the water) is twin 8-metre cascades dropping into a startling turquoise pool inside a limestone canyon. A short, sometimes-slippery concrete stairway gets you down in about 15 minutes, and the real fun is in the gorge — swimming the deep cool pool, picking a line for a small cliff jump on the far side (mind the submerged rocks), and wading downstream past ferns and boulders. The honest counterpoint to Oslob. Bohol banned whale-shark feeding in early 2025, so there's no guaranteed line-up here — just the deep blue off Pamilacan and Balicasag where, in the plankton months of November to March, a wild butanding may glide past your boat or dive on its own terms. It's chance, not a show, which is exactly the point: the animal hasn't been bribed and its migration hasn't been broken. Local's tip: even when the sharks don't show, Pamilacan runs ethical dolphin-watching cruises and Balicasag's wall is one of the best turtle-and-jackfish dives in the country, so you book the day for the whole package, not the sure thing.

Fifteen minutes south of Dumaguete, the black volcanic sand of Dauin Marine Sanctuary is the opposite of a postcard reef — and that's the whole point. This is muck diving, hunting the strange and tiny on a gentle sandy slope across more than 18 sites where guides turn up flamboyant cuttlefish, hairy frogfish, seahorses, mimic octopus and nudibranchs you'd never spot alone. Most sites are shore entries, so no boat needed. Local's tip: it's a completely different day to the Apo Island wall a short hop away — and the reason critter photographers fly in from everywhere, so hire a guide with a good eye and go slow rather than chasing distance.

An hour inland from Cebu City past Toledo, a sun-bleached limestone crag rises out of the jungle — Cantabaco, widely called the best rock climbing in the Philippines. Five sectors hold 100-plus bolted sport routes, from beginner 6a slabs to brutal 8a+ overhangs hung with tufas and pockets, and local guides rent gear and belay first-timers. Local's tip: the village charges only a token climber's fee and there's a red-roofed B&B where climbers post up for days — get there by bus to Toledo then a short habal-habal into the hills, which usually beats any packaged day-trip price.

An overnight bus from Manila gets you to Sagada for the legendary four-hour 'cave connection.' You enter Lumiang Burial Cave past a wall of carved hardwood coffins stacked nine layers high (the oldest around 500 years old), then disappear into the mountain — rappelling down rock shafts on guide-held ropes, squeezing through tight gaps, clambering barefoot over slick flowstone, and wading waist-deep through cold underground streams before climbing up and out through Sumaguing. Carcar's lechon strip at the New Public Market is the cult favorite Cebuanos drive an hour south for — stuffed with spices, fruit juice and a local leaf, then chopped with the pork drippings mixed back in. Stalls all charge about the same, so wander the back row taking free tastes before you pick, and arrive mid-morning when the pigs are freshest.

Dumaguete's most famous pasalubong is the frozen buttercream-and-cashew-meringue silvana, and Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries on San Jose Street is its original home (open since 1977). Buy them frozen on your departure day — they melt fast, so a styro box of butter silvanas is the move.

About 20 minutes from Alona Beach in Dauis, Bohol Bee Farm is the island's farm-to-table institution — organic garden salads, honey-glazed dishes, and cult ice cream flavors like malunggay (moringa), durian, langka and spicy ginger, served clifftop over the sea. Come for lunch, then grab raw honey and chocolate from the on-site shop on the way out.

An open-air compound of 30 competing BBQ stalls beside Chong Hua Hospital: you pick your raw cuts from the display — liempo, chicken skin, isaw, squid — watch them grill over a communal charcoal bed, and eat with puso, Cebu's rice woven and steamed inside a diamond-shaped coconut palm pouch for ₱4–6, with a faint grassy coconut flavor the rest of the Philippines can't replicate. Full meal runs ₱150–300. Men climb barefoot to palm crowns at dawn to collect fresh coconut sap; by the time roadside stalls along Siquijor's circumferential road open, the tuba is cold, mildly alcoholic, slightly sweet, and faintly yeasty — nothing like the aged bahalina, and nothing like lambanog. Pair it with kinilaw na lapu-lapu or lato (sea grapes) with tomato and vinegar from the morning market, which sells out by 9AM. Local's tip: many Siquijor cooks use guava as a souring agent in sinigang instead of tamarind — considered more restorative on this island of healers — so always ask what's souring the broth before you order.

A roughly 45-minute glide by native paddle boat through 1.4km of mangroves to where the river meets the sea, run entirely by BAETAS — a co-op of trained local fisherfolk, farmers and housewives in Aloguinsan. Book the full package ahead (around P800–850 per person) for the welcome ceremony, home-cooked Cebuano lunch and handicraft demo. They cap visitors at 50–60 a day and the boats only run at high tide, so coordinate timing with the tourism office when you reserve.

After dark, a quiet boat glides you upstream beneath the riverside trees of Loboc, where thousands of fireflies pulse in the foliage along the bank — guided by boatmen from the riverside community, not the big resorts. Go between 6 and 8pm on a moonless, clear night, and stay still with lights off so the fireflies keep coming close.

Siquijor isn't just beaches and waterfalls — it's the 'healing island,' and you can sit with real mananambal (folk healers) for a bolo-bolo cleansing (a stone in a glass of water, blown through a bamboo straw to draw out bad energy) or a tuob herbal fumigation at Balay Pahauli in Cantabon. Local's tip: the healers are busiest around Holy Week, when they gather herbs, roots and stones on Mt. Bandilaan over seven Fridays to recharge the oils they use all year.

If Panglao feels too busy, Anda on Bohol's far eastern tip is the slow alternative — powdery white sand, glassy water, and Amun Ini Beach Resort & Spa, an intimate beachfront retreat built around proper spa sessions and quiet. Local's tip: it's roughly a 2–3 hour drive from Tagbilaran, so settle in for several nights rather than a day-trip — the whole point of Anda is doing very little.

The Thalasso pool — seawater heated to 34°C drawn from the Mactan channel — is the centrepiece of one of Cebu's most complete spa resorts. Non-guests can book spa + lunch day passes. Tip: Aquatica Divers and Big Blue work with yoga guides; a one-day combo runs around ₱3,500 per person including pumpboat and instructor.

A 40-minute pumpboat from Maya port (north Cebu) reaches Malapascua — famous for daily guaranteed thresher shark sightings at Monad Shoal at 5am, and white sand at Bounty Beach. Tip: stay at least 2 nights — the shark dive is the reason to come but the second day, with less pressure, is usually the better dive. Non-divers enjoy the beach and shallow house reef.

Apo Island, 35 minutes by pumpboat from Malatapay market, is one of Asia's oldest and most successful community-managed marine sanctuaries — the reef is visibly healthier than almost anywhere in the Visayas. The 1,268+ conical limestone formations of the Chocolate Hills are UNESCO-nominated — and the conservation program now offers guided eco-trails where proceeds go to local farmers and single-use plastics are prohibited on the trail. The trek through the mounds is more interesting than the grandstand view. Tip: the grasses turn chocolate-brown only in dry season (Mar–Apr); at other times they're lush green — equally photogenic, just different.

Siquijor's interior barangays are home to hereditary folk healers (mananambal) who maintain forest herb gardens. Several offer guided walks identifying medicinal plants and explaining traditional preparation — a living ethnobotany tour. The 400-year-old Balete Tree in Lazi has a freshwater spring pool at its roots. Tip: ask your guesthouse to connect you directly with a healer rather than through an agency; a ₱300–₱500 donation is the respectful format.

The community guide cooperative at Kawasan Falls in Badian manages all canyoneering guide fees after commercial operators were found bypassing local hire. Booking through the cooperative means the guide fee stays in Badian barangay.
