Talaandig Soil Painting & School of Living Traditions

year-round (coordinate ahead)

In Songco, in the foothills of sacred Mount Kitanglad, the Talaandig people run a School of Living Traditions where youth learn music, dance, oral history and the tribe's signature art: soil painting — works made entirely from ochre clays of the ancestral land, pulverised and mixed, each colour carrying meaning. Master artist Datu Rodelio 'Waway' Saway, called the father of soil painting and UP Diliman's first Culture Bearer-in-Residence, hosts visitors and workshops at his home. Local's tip: coordinate ahead through the community rather than dropping in, ask to try the pigments yourself, and buy directly so income stays with the artists — this is the quiet, intimate counterpart to the big Kaamulan festival, not a gallery.

Going? The planner prices every way into Bukidnon — planes, ferries and buses side by side.
