Magellan's Cross & Basilica del Santo Niño

Where the Philippines' colonial story begins. Magellan planted his cross here in 1521 — the original encased in a wooden one inside an open kiosk you visit for free — steps from the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño (1565), the country's oldest Catholic church, home to the child-Jesus image Legazpi's men found in the ashes. A few blocks into old Parian sits the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House, a 1600s coral-stone-and-hardwood Chinese-Filipino home you can walk through. Local's tip: do it as a morning loop before the heat and add Casa Gorordo and Fort San Pedro nearby — Fridays draw crowds of Santo Niño devotees.
