Romblon is the marble capital of the Philippines, and the stone is carved by hand right where it's quarried. At workshops scattered about 20 minutes out of Romblon town, you can watch artisans turn rough-hewn blocks into life-sized religious icons and decorative pieces, then buy straight from the carver. Local's tip: for souvenirs that fit in a bag — keychains, mortars, small statues — head to the Romblon Shopping Center and the Marble Central Market in town, but for the real spectacle go to the carving sheds and watch the dust fly; lightweight pieces travel best on the ferry home.
